2018 was our strongest year yet. While student successes abound, what we’re most proud of is that Scholars reached further beyond our program walls than ever before, enacting community development projects, embarking on new adventures, and making ripples all around the world.

Student acceptances, graduations & awards
- Lucky was accepted and began at UWC Red Cross Nordic in Norway
- Phila was accepted and began at Li Po Chun UWC in Hong Kong
- Wendy began studying at UWC Maastricht in the Netherlands
- Justice and Sankelisiwe have begun their studies at the African Leadership Academy in Johannesburg
- Alucia graduated #1 in her class, Honours in Tourism at Tshwane University of Technology
- NomT and Nelisiwe received the REAP bursary to attend university in South Africa
- Allan and Nokwanda were awarded the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Program bursary
- Hloniphile and Constance were awarded the MasterCard Foundation Scholarship, Hloni to the Africa University in Zimbabwe and Constance to the African Leadership University in Rwanda
- Norman completed a second term at Watson University’s social enterprise program
- Roger was awarded the David Scholarship to attend university
Special programs
- Justice and Gladys completed a one-week education internship shadowing teachers at Uplands College in Nelspruit
- Tandzile, Justice, and Muzi completed job shadows at Novare Equity Partners
- Samkelisiwe and Justice were camp counselors at Camp Caldera in Oregon
- Chawe, Lucky, and Phila attended the Yale Young Global Scholars program
- Nosipho and Buyelani attended the Yale Young African Scholars program
- Lizzy attended a marine biology careers camp at Two Oceans Aquarium in Cape Town
- Grade 10s and 11s attended the South African Ideas Festival at the African Leadership Academy
- Wendy completed an extended job shadow with HartROA Astronomy Observatory and attended a space camp in the UK
- Shadrack participated in the GreenPop environmental Festival for Action in the Eastern Cape
- Grade 9s, 10s, and 11s went on a field trip to DNA Biotech in Johannesburg
- Bongane attended the Asheshi AIX coding program in Ghana
- Sphiwe attended the Deloitte YEP program in Pretoria
- Given and Dumi attended the Future of Work conference in Johannesburg
Community action projects enacted
- Given raised funds and worked with local schools to plant 27 trees
- Enky provided dewormers for all interested students
- Constance, Sandiso, Tandzile, and Gladys have been distributing female sanitary packs to orphanages
- Queen ran a literacy program in which older children taught their younger siblings to love reading
- Lizzy and Nezile collected hundreds of pieces of plastic to build eco-bricks
- Mlondi started a chess and passion exploration project at school
- Adronica ran workshops on creative recycling at local primary schools
- Angel took 10 students on job shadows at Tonga Veterinary Hospital
- Anele is developing her own home-made sunscreen
- Andiswa conducted 23 eye exams in collaboration with a local optometrist
- Luyanda launched a feminism education project at local schools
- Norman launched a social enterprise called Dropinsea
- Phila started a computer programming mentorship club
